A lot of people, on first meeting a pet bird, are a bit confused as to how to think about this new beastie. Most people, however, have already met a number of big dogs during their lives; if you just think of a bird as a big dog, you'll probably do fine as you get to know your pet.

How are birds like big dogs?

• If you let either intimidate you once, they'll come after you again and again and control you with fear
• If you let either be dominant, they'll take advantage of you again and again
• If you let either out of your sight, they'll cause chaos and destruction
• Yes, both can be dangerous when they bite
• Both have tremendous amounts of energy, and love to be active, but will love to cuddle when they tire out
• Properly taken care of, both will be wonderful pets who love to interact

Don't be scared of birds. Remember that lots of people have German Shepherds, Dalmatians, and even Great Danes who make great pets. Birds are no worse than these, and much more comfortable when they decide to sit on your lap.
