The key to modeling the way is to DWYSYGTD!

  • Clarify your personal values
  • Set the example by aligning your actions with your values
  • Determine -- and make it clear -- what you will fight for, and when you won't fight -- and then follow up on it!

Make your standards, expecations, and priorities clear, and hold your employees and yourself to them. If you come up short, own up to it, and encourage your employees to call you on it.

There is a challenge here: to help employees' personal values align with your personal values. If there isn't alignment, maybe it's time for the employee to move on (and, if you're the employee, and your values don't align with those of your boss and your organization, then it may be time for you to move on).
